Explore the 2026 Subaru Outback trim levels, engine specifications, fuel economy, interior features, and advanced safety technology to find the configuration that fits your driving needs.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
The Premium starts the six-trim lineup with a 180 hp 2.5L SUBARU BOXER® engine, X-MODE® with Hill Descent Control, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, 12.1-inch multimedia system, power rear gate, and EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology. Limited adds leather-trimmed upholstery, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon® audio system, navigation, heated rear outboard seats, a heated steering wheel, power moonroof, and power front seats. Touring moves further upscale with perforated Nappa leather, heated and ventilated front seats, a 360-degree Surround View Monitor, power-folding mirrors, and Hands-Free Driver Assist Technology. Limited XT keeps the Limited equipment but swaps in the stronger turbocharged engine and adds 19-inch wheels and a Surround View Monitor. Touring XT does much the same with the Touring, pairing its nicer cabin with Turbo power. Then there's the Wilderness. It's the Outback for people who plan to leave the pavement, with the turbocharged engine, 9.5 inches of ground clearance, electronically controlled dampers, all-terrain tires, StarTex® upholstery, and Anodized Copper accents.
Engine (Power)
Premium, Limited, and Touring models use a 2.5L SUBARU BOXER® 4-cylinder making 180 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque. Wilderness, Limited XT, and Touring XT models get the 2.4L turbocharged SUBARU BOXER® four-cylinder, which bumps output to 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. The 2026 Outback uses a Lineartronic® CVT and comes with Symmetrical AWD. There's no need to move up the trim list just to get AWD.
Performance
The Outback has always sat somewhere between a wagon and an SUV, and that's still a big part of its appeal. Standard X-MODE®, Hill Descent Control, Active Torque Vectoring, and 8.7 inches of ground clearance give it more ability on dirt, gravel, and rough roads than the average family crossover. The Wilderness pushes things further with 9.5 inches of clearance and suspension hardware made for tougher terrain. Premium, Limited, and Touring models can tow up to 2,700 lbs., while Wilderness and XT models raise that to 3,500 lbs. when properly equipped.
Interior
There's room for 5 inside, with 43 inches of front legroom and 39.5 inches in the rear. Cargo space is another reason people keep coming back to the Outback. You get 34.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 80.5 cubic feet when they're folded. That's enough room to make the Outback genuinely useful for luggage, beach gear, camping equipment, or the occasional oversized purchase. Higher trims dress things up with leather or Nappa leather upholstery, heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, and more power seat adjustments. Every Outback gets a 12.3-inch configurable digital instrument cluster and a 12.1-inch Subaru Multimedia System with wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. Depending on the trim, you can also get navigation, Harman Kardon® premium audio, and a 360-degree Surround View Monitor. It's a lot of technology, but the useful stuff stays right where you need it instead of making the cabin feel unnecessarily complicated.
Safety Features
EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology and DriverFocus® Distraction Mitigation come standard throughout the lineup. Blind-Spot Warning with Lane Change Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Warning, Reverse Automatic Braking, High Beam Assist, and a Rear-Vision Camera are also included. Touring and Touring XT add Highway Hands-Free Assist for compatible highways, which can take some of the work out of longer drives around Southern California.
